Is the United States afraid of Russia?
The Russia-Ukraine war is still raging on with flood of refugees seeking shelter in Poland and some Baltic states. A number of Ukrainian city have come under heavy bombardment by the Russian military power from land, sea and air wrecking much havoc and devastation on the country.
The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly called for the imposition of no-fly zone over Ukraine to save his people and his country from death and destruction. The US and NATO have rejected this plea as not a viable proposition. Their reason being that this will expose their forces to direct combat with the Russians while trying to enforce the no-fly zone which may lead to a world war if such encounter occurs and escalates.
The US faced similar situation in the Syrian war when Aleppo was bombarded by Russian and Syrian forces that resulted in large casualties and displacement of the inhabitants. There was public outcry to impose a no-fly zone over Aleppo in order to protect the civilian population and reduce the air bombardment.
In a Congressional hearing then on the Syrian war, General Joseph Dunford, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, was asked what he thought about the imposition of a no-fly zone to halt the carnage in Aleppo.
He responded that; "Right now for us to control all of the air space in Syria would require us to go to war against Syria and Russia; that's a pretty fundamental decision…"
This position maintained by US administration often, is another display of weakness which keeps emboldening Russia to take extreme actions in combats including the use of internationally prohibited weapons of mass destruction.
US tends to frequently makes itself look like the underdog when it comes to a potential confrontation with Russia. Russia has never displayed similar weakness when facing the same situation with the US military. Take for instance US went into Syria with the initial objective of removing President Assad from power. However when the war broke out Assad entered into a defense alliance with Russia. Russia immediately responded, deployed it's forces and went into combat in Syria without expressing any fear of confronting US and allied forces that were already present in Syria.
Russia entering into the war changed the balance of power in the conflict. US realizing it's main objective may not be achievable with Russia entering the battle to protect the Assad regime from falling was forced to ditch the overthrow of the Assad regime as a core objective of the mission.
The war ended with Assad remaining in power though significantly through the help and support of the Russian combat forces, reclaiming most of the lost territory from the insurgents some of which were US allies.
This situation is similar to what is playing out in Ukraine but in the reverse order where Russia is fighting to decapitate the current government in Ukraine which also has an informal alliance with US and NATO having performed joint military drills together. The Ukrainian government has requested for a no-fly zone to be imposed in the country to protect the civilian population and reduce the air bombardment. But US and it's allies despite leaving Ukrainians to fight alone shirked from that responsibility with the lame excuse of not wanting to confront the Russians as it might lead to world war.
Well why should this intervention lead to world war this time when similar event in the Syrian war never led to world war. Russia never showed any hesitation to answer the call from Assad and bravely went into combat to accomplish the undertaken to defend Syria and Protect the Assad regime.
Russia has proved to be a more reliable partner than the US in fulfilling it's defense obligations and commitment to it's allies and has shown willingness to sacrifice it's men on such mission to achieve a successful outcome.
It may be easier for Russia to easily fulfill such defense pacts since Vladmir Putin has dictatorial powers to do as he wishes which the US president may not have through the executive powers it can exercise freely without consulting congress to seek approval of any intended military action. It is also much easier for dictatorial regimes to take decisions on the fly without the unnecessary bureaucracy of getting approval from the legislative arm of government or forming a consensus opinion on an issue before action is taking.
This situation is most revealing in NATO where majority of the members have to be in favor of an action before it can be executed and hence they are slow to respond to urgent situations which gives an adversary ample time and advantage to act swiftly on issues that are time critical and hence be ahead of the game.
The US need to change it's tactics in matters such as this and demonstrate boldness and willingness to take risks. President Roland Reagan demonstrated this ability during his tenure and was fearless in speech and action and wouldn't flinch to take on any super power.
The fear of nuclear war is unfounded as only a leader that is insane and out of control will use such against a country that possessed equal capability knowing the consequences of it's use will be dire for the whole world. However if the reason is predicated on Ukraine being within the sphere of influence of Russia, that will make a lot of sense, but then what are they doing there in the first instance setting up bio-labs at the backyard of Russia and having military drills with Ukraine.
Obviously any super power in the same situation as Russia will consider this as a national threat and will deal with the situation as such. Clearly US and it's allies seems to have intentionally engineered the current conflict as a payback for Russia's past unchecked intrasigence and callous actions against US and other European countries including the purported cyber attacks unleashed on US technology infrastructure, the interference in US elections, the use of chemical agents in the streets of Salisbury UK in 2018, and the downing of Malaysian airline Flight 17 over eastern Ukraine en route from Amsterdam in the Netherlands to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia with a Russian-made surface-to-air missile killing all 298 people on board the plane that had a number of European and US citizens onboard, the refusal to accept the inclusion of bio-labs facility inspection as proposed by the UK into the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) making the treaty non enforceable.
The leadership of Ukraine frankly exhibited naivety in international politics and foreign relations but will now learn this lesson the hard way but at a very severe cost of loss of personnel and destruction of their cities with the potential of ceding more territories to Russia in addition to the loss of Cremia penisular by the time the dust settles.
Most democratic institutions will be more measured in decisions relating to war as if it goes against public opinion will have political ramifications and would impact the ruling party negatively which may torpedo their prospects of retaining power in subsequent elections.
The obvious conclusion from the foregoing is that weaker countries that face threat of aggression are better off pitching their tent with a superpower with a dictatorial leader than a country with democratic institutions where decisions are based on consensus rather than individual powers for which Russia has proven to be consistently more reliable and effective. Although dictatorships are considered as anathema since dictators do not always conform to established societal norms and can be oppressive and brutal.
It's time the US asserts itself more on the global stage as a super power and show willingness to risks it's men in combat in order to give confidence to it's allies it swore to defend against external aggression otherwise such countries like Taiwan, South Korea and Japan will have no option but to start building their own internal capabilities to defend itself which may include possessing nuclear deterrents that will contribute to the proliferation with the consequence of making the world very much unsafe.
