The main problem the West seems to have with president Vladmir Putin appears to be his unpredictability and unreliability being a dictator who has failed to keep his side of the bargain many times.
Also being the world number three oil producer, supplying 40% of EU gas gives him enormous leverage over European affairs which is very undesirable for an unreliable partner.
But outside these issues he does have a legitimate claim of sphere of influence being a super power just as the United States.
Let's not forget the Cuban missile crisis of 1962 that brought Russia and the US to the verge of nuclear war due to the fact that the Soviet Union was secretly building nuclear missile sites on the island of Cuba.
America asserted her right of sphere of influence over Cuba just as Russia is now asserting her right over Ukraine.
Let's not be hypocritical about these events and think it through rationally.
NATO should have acceded to Russia's request to guarantee that Ukraine never becomes a member of the alliance being within it's orbit.
Granting this request would have prevented this needless war that will have long term consequences for the world economy.
However that as it may be it is no justification for Russia to have taken such an extreme action to invade the whole Ukraine, a peaceful neighbor that shares common heritage and culture with it using unwarranted brute force in an unprovoked attack that is bound to destroy decades of friendship and cultural ties making Russia their number one enemy.
It’s Ironic that the same Russia that pledged to guarantee Ukraine’s Sovereignty and security in exchange for given up their nuclear arsenal has become the aggressor. How time changes. The US and Britain who were co-guarantors to this agreement have to live up to their responsibility by ensuring this war is halted and reparations paid to Ukraine for failing to guarantee their security as pledged by the three nations.
This war was totally unjustified and unwarranted. It is like Russia fell to the Western trap of bringing harm to itself. It now risks being isolated and it's economy destroyed by this war it is waging against a sister country out of malice for the West.
Two wrongs don't make a right. The same accusation of high handedness and inconsiderate actions it levies against the West and NATO is what it has fallen foul of by disregarding the wishes of the good people of Ukraine to decide their nations path.
Russia must pull back it's forces in Ukraine and resolve this conflict diplomatically otherwise it will become a pariah state.
Ukraine is a peaceful nation and does not deserve this injustice and calamity that has been brought upon it's inhabitants. Sanity must be seen to prevail over chaos and destruction.
